Probably because USyd is my alma mater, I found it much harder to handwave period-typical racist attitudes set there than when I'm reading about, say, Oxford, or New Zealand or Canada.
I should probably have been equally outraged in the past by works set in North America which completely ignore indigenous groups (i.e. almost all of them) but you're right, it's that close-to-home thing that does it. At least the USyd guy didn't, AFAWK, have a ROOM FULL OF BONES in his house though!
