Yuletide recs and reveals

It's the best public holiday here in New Zealand (the Day After New Year's Day, a.k.a. "we're not saying you're all still hungover but we think it's best not to take chances") so it's time for Yuletide reveals.

they choose to take you in, Court of Fives (Kate Elliott), gen post-canon fic about what happens when the long-lost half-sister you were only vaguely aware of having walks into the bar you're sitting in and tries to hire you to help her run away from home.

all it does is rain, Think of England (KJ Charles), post-canon story where Archie and Daniel end up at another, slightly less malicious, country party...but there's still a mystery to solve, and lots of palaeontology. Lots of fun.

Or Dye Trying, The Daevabad Trilogy/City of Brass, Dara and Ali trying to deal with the human world. Excellent snark.

Water over the Bridge, The Daevabad Trilogy/City of Brass, Nahri and Ali try and teach Dara to swim. I don't think canon is going to give me ANYTHING this fluffy so I'll take this instead (for the level of fluff you can get with Dara and Ali on the same continent.)

Rivers of London

Homemakers, LIES SLEEPING SPOILERS, post-book Team Folly fluff, EXCELLENT magical conceit.

essential nature, LIES SLEEPING SPOILERS, post-book dealing with Peter/Beverley and [SPOILERS] and I needed this fic SO BADLY and may have to write the [SPOILER THING] related to it properly now.

There and Back Again, LIES SLEEPING SPOILERS, Beverley and Abigail during the book based on that one line that CRIED OUT for fic, and this is exactly the fic that it was crying out for.

Green and Sharp, no LS spoilers, Team Folly casefic with particularly good Bev and Guleed, and a great Peter voice.

Future Shadows, LIES SLEEPING SPOILERS, Nightingale and Abigail have a conversation about/after the events of the book. I have to note here that this fic uses a fan theory about Nightingale's aging that I completely and utterly reject, but otherwise it's so good I couldn't not rec it.

The Daevabad Trilogy
One person wrote ALL the Daevabad Trilogy stories this Yuletide and they deserve a special commendation because WOW.

light those stars in your eyes (like fireworks in the sky), Dara/Nahri, post-book. Manizheh crashes Nahri's wedding.

Rekindled, Gen with canon-level Dara/Nahri, post-book; Manizheh is running a con with a revived Dara, Nahri is trying to figure out ways around it. I loooove Nahri using her con artist talents.

(you will never break the) chain, Jamshid/Muntadhir, pre-canon, ALL the angst in the best way (I want these two to be happy and it's not going to happen so I'll just roll around in the angst)

The Mummy (1999)

Perks of Being a Bembridge Scholar: post-first movie, Evie and Rick go to look at some bog bodies in a Danish museum. Guess what happens. Guess.

Small Favours, pre-movie, Jonathan involves Evie in a small-time con. Fantastic sibling relationship.

Imperial Radch Trilogy

From the Fire: pre-first book, Breq takes a pottery class. Lovely worldbuilding.

Bend It Like Beckham

it starts with us: post-movie, Jules and Jess move to America and fail to notice they're dating. These two are PERFECT for this trope and also WHY DIDN'T THE MOVIE GIVE US THE CUTE QUEER TEENAGERS STORY WE DESERVED

Swallows and Amazons

Preparing the Expedition: Epistolary fic prior to Winter Holiday as the Swallows and Amazons get ready to go to the North Pole and break some silly boarding school rules. Lovely.

Legally Blonde

she who is best prepared Post-movie, Vivian and Elle prepare for the bar exam. Great female friendship and if you want to read it as more, you can (I did).

Kushiel's Legacy

Phèdre's Choice: AU where Phèdre takes Melisande's offer in the second book. I could have read a novel-length version of this but the short version is also very good (and not just for the shallow Phèdre/Melisande reasons.)

Books of the Raksura

Consorts and Traditions: sometime in the middle of the series (I think?), everybody goes on a trip and Moon teaches some of the children to fish.
