That’s a very interesting dealbreaker! I definitely enjoy it when it’s there, too, especially as a development arc—respect-building, friendship-discovery slow-burn is like catnip for me, especially but very much not exclusively in romantic plots. It’s such a frequently overlooked part of romance in books! I keep wanting authors to go back and spend more time on the conversations and dynamics-exploring, getting them from point A to point B. But oh well, that’s what we have fanfiction for.
