Fascinatingly, it isn't even obvious that the dragons in these books really understand/recognise human gender - they recognise gendered *roles*, like being a Knight or a Princess, but if any dragon can be the Queen or King then do they think very much about human reproductive status being tied to the ability to be a Princess? Who knows.

I do wish this attitude was more intentional in the way the books treat human women, where there's a lot of Not Like The Other Girls Princesses.
